Termites are well known for causing significant damage to a home or business premises. These pests can thrive undetected for months on end, inflicting large amounts of damage to the structural timber, making the home potentially dangerous to be in.

It’s a little known fact that most insurers will not cover damage caused by termites, so the homeowner is then forced to pay for the damages which can be in the tens of thousands to repair.

In south-east Queensland, it’s typical for 1 in 4 homes to experience termite activity at some stage. This is why it is so important to have a professional termite inspection done on your home on an annual basis. If there are termites active, this is where they will be discovered and treated to stop them causing damage. We can provide termite inspections for Gold Coast homes all year round.

What’s Included In A Termite Inspection?

Firstly, a termite inspection is very different from a termite check. A termite check merely looks at the home and surrounds visually for signs of termites. As termites can hide undetected, they will most likely be missed in this type of service, resulting in damage to your home.

A termite inspection is far more thorough. Your timber pest technician will start by conducting an inspection of the home inside and out. This will include visual checks of the outdoor area in places termites often reside, gardens, timber fences, around stored timber, tree stumps, timber house footings and air conditioning units.

In addition, your technician will use traditional methods of detection with technology devices. Tapping structural timbers on door and window frames and skirting boards and timber floors will help identify any activity there. The devices such as the Termatrac T31 are placed on walls to detect moisture, temperature changes and movement using thermal technology. These devices are highly accurate and can pin-point termite activity well.

If your technician discovers termite activity, they will provide you with a report on the findings and recommended options to treat the termites. This may include spot treating by injecting chemical into an area, installation of a baiting system, through to a fully installed chemical barrier solution around the perimeter of the home using specially designed chemicals such as Termidor. These options can be tailored to suit the situation and your budget. The inspection will take at least two (2) hours to complete. Barriers will require regular maintenance to top-up the chemical annually.

How To Reduce Termites At Your Home

There are a number of DIY steps you can take to help reduce termites around your home, including:

  • Keep garden beds away from the wall of the home. Moisture attracts termites.
  • Check downpipes for leaks and repair as required.
  • Repair any leaking taps outside.
  • Repair any leaking taps or pipes inside the house.
  • Store firewood off the ground and away from the house.
  • Dispose of waste materials such as cardboard.
  • Don’t use wood mulch, pine bark adjacent to the house walls.
  • Ensure the air conditioner water waste pipe is diverted into a drain outside the house.
